What do you say when an outside firm requests a copy of your BCP ?
More and more, we are seeing companies asking for copies of a business continuity plan (or disaster recovery plan) from their suppliers. The point of their doing this is to be assured that the suppliers will continue to be in business. So what should be your response when you are faced with that question ? It could be that a multi-million dollar deal hinges on you demonstrated that you have an adequate plan.
Some companies are willing to comply with such requests without even having an NDA (Non-disclosure agreement) in place. This is not a good idea.
It may not be necessary to disclose the contents of your business continuity plan when the requestor only needs to know (and have proof) that the plan exists and is appropriate. The results of your last exercise may be sufficient or perhaps certification by a third party.
It may be necessary to sit with a representative of the requesting company, in your boardroom, while they skim through your plan to satisfy the requirement. I don’t believe that it is ever necessary to release a copy of your plan to anyone outside of your company. However, if that is the case, then you must sanitize the plan by removing personal information about your staff. You should also review financial information and remove as much as possible.
Remember that your plan, in the wrong hands, is a very valuable document for those who would cause you harm.
